Base No MoreCongress passed the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act of 1990 in hopes of reducing costs. There has been a push to close bases that are no longer vital to the Department of Defense. This act is designed to free resources that could be used for safety upgrades and purchase of new technology and weapons in more established bases. The Department of Defense spends over $2 billion each year in energy costs alone- electricity, water, steam, and sewer systems. Moore Military Base is has been selected as one of the bases to be cut from the Defense budget because it is no longer cost effective to remain open.
Military housing provides for 40% of military families. A Community Relocation Center, which employs over 100 people, was also established to help families adjust to their new home. The civilian community has also grown significantly since the opening of the base in 1942. Several new schools were built to accommodate military children of all ages. The downtown district built shopping malls, restaurants, and other local businesses to take advantage of the incoming revenue. Real estate developers have increased their housing developments in hopes of military families remaining in this community upon completion of duty.
